HOME-MADE BUTTER

Today, some students made home-made butter with Mrs Kellie. Here are some photos & an explanation from Brayden. Butter making with Brayden, Rico, Indiana, Nica, Yolanda, Caiden, Jeremiah, Lily-Grace and Daisy Today we made butter. We made it with pure cream, a couple of jars and salt (optional).  It was accompanied by bread. We also used shop brought butter to compare the taste. We poured the cream into two jars till they about half full. We added salt to one jar. We took it  in turns shaking each jar until we couldn’t hear the liquid moving around. When we opened the jar  it had turned into whipped cream. We continued to shake it until the whipped cream turned to a solid. We saw that the butter turned into a ball on the side of the jar. We opened the jars and Mrs Kellie removed the butter milk by kneading it with a spoon. We did this so it didn’t go rancid or make the bread so soggy. FOOD FOR LIFE - Kai mo te ora

Thanks to Andy from Food for Thought who came to talk to us about how to read labels on the back of cereal packets. We also looked at how much sugar is in different types of drinks. Most of the children got quite shock when they realised how much sugar was in a bottle of apply juice or coke! ASK THEM HOW MANY TEASPOONS ARE IN THE ABOVE DRINKS!  This Friday we have our trip to Pak n'Save where we'll be checking the nutrition labels on a variety of foods.

S.U.H.U.P.U - Oral language activity!

STAND UP,  HAND UP,  PAIR UP Room 17 learnt about a new way to help consolidate their learning.  Each child has a question related to something we've learnt during the week or last term. When music plays, they have to kanikani around the room & when it stops, they have to put their hand up & pair up with the person closest to them.  You give your new buddy a 'high five', say Kia Ora, then each person has a turn at asking a question.  Once that's done, they swap cards, the music starts & they move on. STUDENT VOICE: - "This helps us remember what we've learnt during the week" - " If I come across the same question again & I didn't know the answer the first time, I do now" - " I learnt about when the Treaty of Waitangi was signed because I'd forgotten" - " My friend helped me to answer what number was one less than 635,000 - 634,999 - " There was only one part of the Statistical Inquiry ...

PROBLEM SOLVING - MATHS

CLICK ON LINK BELOW TO WATCH OUR VIDEO In Room 17 we work in groups of 3-4 to complete a maths problem. The students are given a word problem, have to look for clues in the problem to help them solve it, come up with mathematical proof, which can be in written form, diagrams or drawings.  Next they try & solve the problem the most efficient way (multiplicative thinking if applicable), then for reflection they talk about the Learning Pit.  Here is Caiden explaining on behalf of his group. Nica and Luis used a divider to show the line of symmetry and this helped with rotating their design. NGA AKONGA KAHA (Active Learners).

ANZAC SOLDIER by Luis

Anzac Soldier by Luis The roaring sound of bullets occupied  my mind, I was paralyzed with fear. Suddenly without warning the Officer called out “Fire your guns!” We all fired like we had never fired before. Then I heard intensely loud screaming, I stopped firing and and stared at what was making the noise. When I turned around I saw a soldier holding his chest, It was bleeding intensely. Then there was more screaming, Frightened I went back to shooting. All I could think of was my family, Oh what I would give to see them again… It was now midnight, the firing had not yet stopped. The next day had finally arrived and so we had breakfast. Breakfast was made out of a microscopic piece of stale bread and some green water. Although it didn't seem like much to us, it was food fit for a king. I have been called out to the front lines and over sixty of my fellow comrades have already died in less than two minutes and three seconds. I personally don't think I will ...
