Week 10 - INTRODUCTION TO TERM 4'S INQUIRY

Image
As an introduction to our Term 4 Inquiry the students were asked to eat a lollie & then create something with the wrapping paper.  It was interesting the things the students came up with. Each group was also given a large ice block stick & were asked to be creative with that. Groups came up with mini-slim lined cellphone, baton for running, used for filling in the gaps for a storm water drain & an interesting slapping stick.  Once again, the different versions of what to do with the stick was quite innovative.   Enterprise, Innovation & Creativity Naku te rourou nau te rourou ka ora ai te iwi With your basket and my basket the people will live With co-operation and the combination of resources we will get ahead

Week 10 - Marae Visit

Image
Here are some photos of our Marae Visit. The students learnt a lot about parts of a Marae.  Two students in our class decided to make a papier mache model of a Maori Pa with a Marae and Whare on the top. GREAT WORK, BAILEY & CAIDEN! Photos from Hoani Waititi Marae.  The students learnt a new waiata and actions.

Week 10 - Last week of the term. STEAM class.

What a fabulous day we had with our sister class in China. Today we looked at the art & maths component related to our tiny homes. In order for the students to get an idea of the scale of a tiny house & what goes into it, we drew up a scaled model in the classroom. In groups, the students were given different rooms to create using whatever furniture they could find in the classroom.  What an amazing time in terms of thinking, relating to others, using symbols & texts, managing themselves and participating & contributing in their groups. Lots of problem solving happened too & especially having to negotiate for space. Here are some of the photos.

Week 9 - LOST PROPERTY

Image
Room 17 holds all lost property. If your child or a friend's child has lost a jumper, hat, shoes, umbrella, jackets or drink bottles, then they are probably in our cloak bay.  Help us get rid of the items by telling your friends.  There are hundreds of dollars worth of clothing & items.

Week 8 - S.T.E.A.M Dual Class Project

I've had a couple of families ask what STEAM is. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century! This approach is being applied to our project: Tiny Houses. Here is a photo of our live stream with China.

WEEK 7 - Mahi Kaha (working hard)

Week 7: What a busy week we've had in Room 17. The students have started on narrative writing and are coming up with some very creative stories. Don't forget to ask your child about their writing and what elements they have to have in order to write and structure a piece of writing. Late week 8 or early week 9, the students will be doing a writing assessment. Maths: we've been working on decimals to 2 or 3 decimal places this week. In particular tenths and hundredths. The students have been reading and writing numbers to the millions, but in particular reading numbers into the trillions. Reading: most of the students have completed the activities related to their novel study. There are a couple who have yet to finish their book.  This leads in well to the reading assessment we will be doing next week. Inquiry: we are still working on our inquiry of Celebrating our Cultures. The students have come up with what we call 'think' questions to further research i
